From Bourbon Barrel to One-of-a-Kind Whiskey Cabinet

Reclaimed bourbon barrel wood meets polished copper in a truly unique whiskey cabinet build

For the Grain to Grain event, Bourbon Moth set out to create a piece that connected woodworking, bourbon and the craftsmanship and history of Buffalo Trace Distillery. The result is a one-of-a-kind whiskey cabinet built using wood from real, used Weller Millennium bourbon barrels.

Rather than following the traditional approach of building directly around the curved shape of barrel staves, Bourbon Moth founder Jason Hibbs developed a more unconventional technique. The team skinned three barrels' worth of staves and created their own veneer, applying the barrel wood to white oak. This allowed the team to work with the character of the barrel wood while building a cabinet with clean, straight lines.

To add another dimension to the design, the cabinet incorporates Homapal® M9426-99 Polished Copper. The metallic surface was used behind the cabinet's central glass storage area, providing a visual accent that complements the bourbon-inspired design. Hibbs said the copper helped suggest elements of the distillery's stills while giving the cabinet an extra pop.

The finished cabinet combines reclaimed barrel wood, white oak and polished metal into a piece that reflects the spirit of Grain to Grain: bringing different materials, makers and ideas together to create something special.

The cabinet will be raffled through Katz-Moses Tools in support of the Katz-Moses Woodworkers with Disabilities Fund part of Giving Tuesday on Dec. 1, giving one lucky winner the opportunity to take home a truly unique piece of woodworking history. Purchase tickets HERE.
